On Sunday, fifteen people enjoyed a fascinating and very useful talk by Steve Bullen about how to make a wildflower meadow patch. It included how to prepare the ground, what sort of seed mix to use and when to cut it. We also visited the two wildflower patches in the park, spotting butterflies, bees and moths - and lots of different wild flowers.

Friends of Greaves Park will be working in the park next Saturday 15 July from 2-4 pm. We will be clearing overhanging nettles and brambles etc. from the paths in the Community Garden, the Croquet Lawn and near Parkfield House. And we will be doing a litter pick near the play park.
Do join us! We will meet at 2pm at the shed near Bowerham Road. Our play park has been out of action for many months while the surface has been renovated and new equipment has been installed. On June 9th we had a grand opening of the newly refurbished Play Park, with face painting and games and a race to get into the Play Park. Many thanks to the Greaves Park Pub for supplying drinks for the occasion! Have you ever thought about making a wildflower meadow patch, but not sure how to go about it?
Over the last 4 years the Friends have created 2 low maintenance wildflower patches from seed. This event will explain how to choose your site and prepare it, which seed mixes to use, techniques for sowing them, and how to maintain your patch. We'll also talk about some of the wildflower species on our patch, and their value to wildlife. You may want to bring a notebook! We'll meet at the Play Park at 2.0 pm We had a very successful Tree Walk on a glorious sunny day in the park on Sunday.
Around 20 people heard Steve Bullen talk about some of the most interesting trees in the park, both native and exotic. There were lots of fascinating facts about when the trees were introduced into this country, what the wood was used for, which insects and birds have particular links with certain trees - and lots more besides! Donations and sales of the booklet "A History of Greaves Park" raised £40 for the Friends. Thank you to everyone who came. We will be working in the park next Saturday 20 May 2-4 pm. We will probably be weeding the new hedge and doing some clearing in the croquet lawn area. We'll meet at the shed at 2.00 - new volunteers welcome! Discover the wonderful variety of trees in the park, both native and exotic.
Some are more than 100 years old and were planted by the two owners whose gardens now make up Greaves Park. Steve Bullen will lead a Tree Walk around the park on Sunday 21st May. We'll meet at the Play Park at 2.00 pm. Our next Work Party will be this Saturday 15 April from 2.00-4.00. We will be working in the Community Garden doing some weeding, tidying and planting.
Do join us! We'll meet at the shed near Bowerham Road on the right hand side of the pub access road. |
