Storm Arwen has taken its toll all over the UK. In Greaves Park a few small trees fell over, and one is in the process of being removed by the Council's Tree Gang (see photo).
One really big tree also fell over, sadly, but it still looks quite spectacular (see photo). We think it would be a good idea to leave it as it is. A fallen tree may in fact carry on growing even though it is on the ground (see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-49632776) and this one has plenty of roots and is even coming into bud!
Even if the tree dies it will provide very welcome dead wood for many rare invertebrates and fungi. These invertebrates will provide important food for birds, and as the wood rots it will provide cover for nesting birds, and bats may roost in cracks and fissures as they develop - so dead or alive the tree will continue to support a multitude of organisms!
If you would like to take a look at this magnificent tree it is in the wooded area that we call "Beechwood". You can find it by going through the Community Garden, turning left along the driveway, and then climbing the steep bank on your right into a wooded area. Carry on uphill and you will come across it.
